Well, finally, 15 years after mine was built, several years since this issue is known, I got my recall for the faulty cruise control this weekend.

Now I can take it to the dealer, who told me before that there is nothing they have to do. Not the same dealer, but I got the paperwork.

Not that I'm on fire all the time, but I rather get it done, don't want to take the chance.

Anybody else got one?

Greetings!

I got one for my 95 GM back in august. I was told by the dealer the last time I had oil change, but the parts won't be available untill fall.he wanted me to unhook it, but I told him I use it all the time.

If something gets disconnected and something else doesn't work afterward, well, then someone simply had no clue what they were doing.

First of all, this recall is not 1 single recall. The older Ford/Mercurys were recalled starting in 1999already, due to a possible fault in the cruise control switch. The TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) called for running a new ground wire in the engine compartment. There was never a switch to be replaced, or any disconnecting needed. The background was:

"Problems with the Texas Instruments device first surfaced in the late 1990s, prompting Ford to recall nearly 280,000 1992 and 1993 Mercury Grand Marquis sedans. A year later, NHTSA began an investigation after receiving complaints about engine fires in Ford vehicles that used the device."

The second, and current recall, calls for a replacement of the cruise control switch, but only at newer models. If not available, it should be disconnected till the new parts are available (shortage in production).

The current recall only includes the older ones, because the system goes over all vehicles with similar issues, and of course catches the ones which were never taken care of, or not reported.

I was mainly asking about the older ones. I was told by the former owner he had it done on mine in in the 90's. Carfax does not show the service, and now that I got the recall, it shows that it was either not done, or not reported. I will take mine to a different dealer to check it out. It should be easy to see, since there should be new wiring (hope they did it right).

Greetings!

P.S.: Here are all the recalls regarding the ccswitch:

"The first recall was in May 1999, affecting 279,000 Ford Crown Victorias, Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Cars for model years 1992 and 1993. The second, issued in January 2005, affected 792,000 vehicles, including model year 2001 F-Series SuperCrews, 2000 Ford Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators, and 2000 F-150 trucks."Edited by: 92Mercury

Here's the recall from 1999 (Note: you will not find the procedure regarding the ground wire there, as it is part of the TSB, not recall):

NHTSA Recall Campaign Number: 99V124000 [/b]

Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Details: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH CAN DEVELOP A RESISTIVE SHORT IN THE ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT THAT COULD POTENTIALLY RESULT IN AN UNDERHOOD FIRE. A FIRE IS POSSIBLE BOTH WHEN THE VEHICLE IS RUNNING AND WHEN THE VEHICLE ENGINE IS OFF. ALSO, THE SHORT COULD DISABLE THE SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM OR CAUSE THE BRAKE LIGHT FUSE TO OPEN.

Consequence: A FIRE CAN ORIGINATE IN THE LEFT FRONT UNDERHOOD AREA.

Corrective Action: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH AND CONNECTOR SHELL. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MAY 20, 1999.

Units Potentially Affected: 262695

Date added to NHTSA datbase: 05/20/1999

And here's the one they just started:

Consequence: THIS COULD RESULT IN AN UNDERHOOD FIRE.

Corrective Action: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A FUSED WIRING HARNESS. OWNERS OF THE PASSENGER CARS INCLUDED IN THIS CAMPAIGN WILL BE INSTRUCTED TO RETURN THEIR VEHICLES TO THEIR DEALERS TO HAVE THE SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH DISCONNECTED AS AN INTERIM REPAIR. AS SOON AS REPAIR PARTS ARE AVAILABLE (EXPECTED OCTOBER 2007), OWNERS WILL BE INSTRUCTED TO RETURN TO THE DEALERS FOR INSTALLATION OF A FUSED WIRING HARNESS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 13, 2007, AND MAILING COMPLETED BY SEPTEMBER 19, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT FORD AT 1-888-222-2751.
