The check engine light on my2000 VillagerEstate (100K mile no-tune) is illuminated. Before taking the car into the shop, any suggestions on things I can check myself? I've checked the obvious, such as fluids. The light is not intermittent, and the engine, which has~65K miles, runs relatively well. Edited by: pllewellyn

Get the code from the ECU, that's the way to find out.

It is probably going to be an oxygen sensor.

Most Advanced Auto Parts stores will run a Diagnostic check on your vehicle at no charge. You definitley need the ECU code to detect what is sending a signal to the check engine light. I had this problem with my 1999 Villager a number of times; first was the oxygen sensor then the MAPP sensor and finally the Knock Sensor. The dealership wanted $700.00 to replace the Knock sensor stating that they had to pull the engine to get at the back of the engine. I ended up trading it in for a 2005 Mariner. Good Luck!
