I have my mountaineer in the shop right now and they can't figure out what is wrong with it. They've replaced the front and rear speed sensors and finally told me they can't figure it out. It's at a dealership so I would think they'd be able to figure it out but so far I've had no luck. Here's what happens:


When I drive the car, there's moments when the gauges on the dash board start going crazy back and forth and the computer in the center console with the milage, etc. starts going crazy too. Sometimes it drives fine but it's gotten to the point that most of the time the gauges go crazy. Also, when it does this and I have my foot on the gas pedal, it gives out for a second and jerks the car over and over. It doesn't totally lose power but it jerks like it's about to lose power and then gets power back.


Any help anyone can offer would beMUCH appreciated...I'm at the end of mynerves with this car!! Thank you!

sounds like if it cuts out while driving, its the crank sensor.

Well Ford gave the car back and said they couldn't figure out the problem.


We realized that the car runs great as long as the A/C and the lights aren't on. When we turn the lights on, the A/C defrost turns onto high, but the digital lights for the A/C don't turn on. And when the lights go on, the car starts to cut out and the gauges go crazy back and forth.


We're assuming it's some kind of crossed wires or something but we can't find them. Any ideas?

sounds like you are having voltage flucuations. go to your nearest auto zone and they will probably check your alternatorfor free. i hate electrical problems. let me know how things go.

My money is on the alternator. I had a simular problem on a car I owned. It got to the point where my cruise control would kick on all by itself, and I would start excellerating. I swapped out the alternator and I never had another problem.

Well we ended up taking the car back to a local guy instead of a dealership. He was supposed to be an "electrical expert". He had it fixed within 3 hours. Turns out it was a bad ground.


Overall, cost usa little under $600($289 at Ford for nothing and $259 at this other place, Haye's Automotive and it was fixed almost immediately). I guess the moral of the story is to stay away from the dealerships. Anyway, thanks to everyone who tried to help.
