2001 Cougar no Acceleration
 

Hi, I have a 2001 Cougar V6, I just bought it and there was no acceleration whatsoever, will not go over 30km/h, and the rpm will not go over 3000 even in neutral.
I noticed the dpfe switch was all melted and the hoses, so i replaced it, but stil the same thing.
the engine seems to be scorching hot especially back there, thats why it melted.
when you drive it, it only switches gears once, from 1st to second, then no more shifting.
If you press the gas in neutral all the way, the engine is very loud, not like it should be.
Anyone have any ideas?
No check engine light on, I did get one once and I erased it, it was cylinder 5 missfire, but I am thinking it has nothing to do with it.

I sure hope at least one of you over there can take a bunch of pictures for us Cougar owning yanks.....

Kind of sounds like you may have an exhaust restriction... Either a bad catalytic converter or possibly even a plugged muffler..

maybe it's the air cooler, I don't know the exact name of the part, it receives the air from the air intake.

more then likley restriction in exaust.
 

Been a tech for many years and on occation, get a restricted exaust issue.

If the exaust sounds alot quieter then usuall when reving it when in nutural, then you are likely to have restricted exaust from a plugged up cat converter or collapsed baffles in muffler. Cats do not plug on there own. you have a underling engine trouble issue that is causing it to become plugged.

Take off the o2 sensor at front of cat "when engine is cold" then start engine and notice if the rpms clime much easier and more freely. IF so, you have a plugged cat. Get engine checked, then replace defective part and cat and your issue will be resolved.
