96 cougar XR7 V8 - AC question
 

Hi, I own a 71 XR7 converible already. Hopefully, I'm going to get to buy this 96 cougar today with super low miles. My question is the AC is not blowing cold. It is blowing just not cold. I have a friend that had a 90's model mustang and his uncle had a 90's model cougar. Both of there cara just needed a AC switch that he said was about seven dollars and it fixed the problem. I'm going to try that has anyone else out there had this happen?

Are you sure the system is fully charged and there are no leaks? Do you hear a change in the air speed when you switch it between the 2 or 3 A/C settings? All the fan speeds work okay?

he might mean the ac pressure switch. replacing that requires re-filling the system. You'll need to completely evacuate the system, replace the expansion valve (since the system will be open anyhow to replace the pressure switch), it's always a good idea to replace the accumulator/dryer at this point too, and then put everything back together. Then you get to pump it down for an hour (to make sure all the air is out - this really helps the system work better) and then let it sit for an hour to make sure there's no leaks. Then recharge the system with refrigerant and maybe some more refrigerant oil too. You can also use one can of the refrigerant with the oil in it to simplify things. You will need a gauge that doesn't leak when attached to monitor things. If you're using a vacuum pump made for AC systems it should have a gauge in it and that should work fine for this testing. Be aware that not properly removing refrigerant from vehicles could result in fines depending on your area. Check your local laws, but it's always better safe than sorry and just to reclaim anything that's in the car. If it's already empty (and usually open to the air because of a leak) you'll have more things to replace than just the switch. Definitely check to make sure that there is something in the system first to know that you don't need to replace the seals and/or hoses/cores/etc.

Ok, well the guy wasn't able to show me the car today. So, I can't answer some of the questions. I'm not really sure if this guy wants to sell the car or not. I just have a weird feeling by talking to him. I will post more info if I buy the car. I'm supposed to go and look at tomorrow.
