hm...whenever you start it up...if you keep it in idle for a while does it shut down? or just shuts down right away???

I am a Cougar owner, I bought it new in 1994. However, it started shutting down while driving alone. The last time it shut down, I had driven about nine miles on straight high way and it just shut down. All the lights in the dash came on, but would not restart. To this day it cranked once since then.

hm...wow...it might be either the alternator, starter, connection to the starter, or somethin like that. one time i had problems gettin mine started up, like it would start up but then try to shut down, and with that problem my Vacume hose needed replaced. so you might want to even get that checked.

It sounds like your crank sensor is faulty if the car shut down at highway speeds.See if you or someone who understands the phrase, " excite the solenoid " can give that a try and see what happens. It means to touch the two poles on the solenoid or starter together. That should narrow it down.
