So I was driving me 00 Cougar around and suddenly the ABS and brake lights come on. Parking brake isn''''t on and everything works fine. Brakes are fine too-I just replaced the pads and rotors about 3000 miles ago. However, after a while, I can press the traction control button and the lights go away. Sometimes they go away on their on. Right now they are off again after the traction control button trick. Any ideas?

Have you looked at the rear brake pads? There is a sensor that indicates when your pad is low.

I had a similar issue with my 2001 V6. It turned out that the brake fulid was low so you might want to check that. Also if its a 5 speed you might start noticing it being a little more difficult to get it into gear because the hydrolic clutch uses the brake fluid.

If you are having no ill-effects or leaks, then I am going to go out on a limb and say it is just a "dummy light" acting up. I have a 1998 Ranger that does the same exact thing but I know the ABS still works by slamming on the brakes. If you are having no brake probs at all and can get the light to go off by messing with the T/C switch I would not be too worried. I think the sensors are dirty. Mine went on every time it rained. Give the brake system a once over, check for leaks and clean what components you can. Remember to never add brake fluid unless there is a leak. Brake fluid levels drop as the pads wear out and adding fluid will make a big mess when you push the caliper piston(s) back on your next brake job. And brake fluid likes to eat paint, and certain rubber and plastics.

all i''m goin to say is that it''s sounding like a sensor is startin to go bad. idk i don''t have ABS or Traction control or anything like that on my 99. but like i said it is sounding like a bad sensor or a wiring problem.
