1995 Mercury Mystique stalling when stopping at lights...

This just happened coming home from work today. Car is fine driving, but when I have to stop for lights (or heavy traffic) and the tach drops, the lights fade and then snap back, while the engine revs up and then drops off to the point of stalling. It follows this pattern of surging then fading, then stalls after 30 seconds or so. It isn't sputtering, or backfiring at all. When I start driving again, there seems to be no problem at all.

I know it's never a good time for car repairs, but I'm already on reduced hours at work and I'm hoping this is something that isn't too serious.

Thanks for any help!

check the alternator and battery. sounds like there's a power delivery issue (electrically speaking).
