Brake Warning Lights

I am new to this site so hopefully I can find some guidance. I own a 2004 Mountaineer, AWD. Recently both the red Brake (parking brake) and the yellow ABS lights have been coming on, periodically. After driving a few miles, I get the rediculously annoying wrench sign and the vehicle goes into crawl home mode (I call it half speed). I have read the owners manual and some technical data, and all it says is when these two warning lights come on at the same time, that is not good. The problem is, the lights do not come on all the time. Some times I can go whole trips without the lights coming on. Sometimes I can't get out of the driveway. Before I head off to the shop to get reemed, I was wondering if anyone has ever experienced this problem before, and what the fix is. I do believe my brakes are in good shape. I am hoping this is not a computer issue.

The Mountaineer only has 69,000 miles on it, and the brakes were services at 40,000 miles.

Thanks for any help and replies.

If the brakes lights are on, the parking brake may either have been set, misadjusted or undergone some other kind of serious problem so the best advice would be to get it checked by an auto maintenance shop. If the lights switch on only when you apply the brakes or if it stays on, the brake fluid may be very low or the hydraulic pressure would have been lost from one part of the braking system. Either way, you have to get the vehicle checked out.

The warning lights could give an accurate picture of the type of maintenance that is required. An auto maintenance professional would be able to diagnose the problem and set it right.
