Calling all 1997 Merc Mountaineer 5.0L Veterans

I've read tons of forums, talked to the certified parts dealer at the Ford/Merc service center and talked to the folks at the Zone and they have all told me the same thing, "the egr sensor is located next to the egr valve and the egr regulator". They have even showed pictures, however, the sensor is not there. I have taken the regulator off, no sensor attached. I have taken off the egr elbow, no sensor. I am just short of removing the intake manifold to see if it is in there. I have purchased the replacement and cannot find where it is, even though the OEM part is metal I still can not find it's location. It's very frustrating. I need a Veteran to tell me exactly where this "ghost" sensor is? Please help!!!

Anyone? I don't have a M'neer but I will try to research it for you. 4.6? AWD?

topic says 5.0... but I'm a little confused on what sensor he's talking about. I don't know of an EGR sensor. I know of oxygen sensors, differencial pressure sensors, EGR valve position sensors... but not just an EGR sensor. But then I don't know anyone with the newer 5.0 so that may have changed.

Slymer & Conan312, correct it is a 5.0L 2WD. The sensor I am refering to is the EGR valve presure sensor aka DPFE. The link below shows picture of it from the Zone. I appreciate all/any help.

thanks!

yeah... autozone broke the direct links (with redirects) so that doesn't work any more. but I have looked at the images and know what you're referring to. That should be on a bracket somewhere on the backside of the upper intake or on the firewall (probably under the ledge where the wipers are mounted). at worst, it'll be mounted on a wheel well with all the other vacuum pressure sensors and maybe even a barometric pressure sensor. Since I don't have a mountaineer to look at, I can't tell you exactly where it is though.

if i remember right... some of them had internal EGR stuff and not all were external...

do a search on Car-Parts.com and look up the engine and i think it asks external or internal EGR setup.

Hello Crown Vic, I went to car-parts.com and it only asks for engine w/ or w/out hole for egr valve in exh manifold, no mention of external or internal stuff.
Not sure what you mean by internal or external?

Not sure what car-part meant by w/ hole or w/out hole in exhaust manifold as the EGR is on the intake manifold. So I am not sure which engine I have.

Please advise further.

thanks,

there should be a pipe going from the egr down to the exhaust. does it go to a hole in the exhaust manifold or somewhere else?
