hi, my wife has a 97 mercury villager van and the engine light came on and i had an auto parts store check it for me and they said that it was the knock sensor and it cost $169.99. could some one please tell me what this is and where it is located at on the van. what will happen if you dont fix it ? thanks rick |
The knock sensor is located on top of the engine underneath the intake manifold. Unless you have a problem with the vehicle I would not attempt to repair it itsa big waste of money. Id have the light reset and leave it alone unless you start to have problems.

The knock sensor is for octane ratings if you use the same gas and dont hear a knock then like merc said why bother with it it can be a wast of money .

thank you for the info . it is not knocking but when it is in drive and you come to a stop it sounds like it wants to cut out, does that have anything to do with the knock sensor ? i just put new plugs in it about 3 weeks ago. rick |
No, but the ruff idle might have set that code. Hoping it doesn't have anything to do with any crossed plug wires . Try cleaning out the idle control valve with carb. cleaner, it sometimes works.

also remember that the knock sensor on some models will turn off the injector of the cylinder where a knock is detected
