1992 grand marquis LS has 308 ring and pinion thinking about changing to a 273 or 240 looking for gas mileage would appricate any advise jp

I wouldn't do it unless you are driving all highway and lots of it. You will use more gas getting up to speed. Once up to speed, the engine would be revving lower but might be below it's most efficient r.p.m. ( the torque convertor could still be slipping).


I had an 86 Mustang GT that actually got better mileage by goingfrom a 2:73 TO 3:55 (STRAIGHT DRIVE THOUGH). It saw alot of stop and go driving and little interstate so I got up to speed more efficiently. If I had taken a long trip at 70 m.p.h. it would have been worse mileage by far.
