Help! Rough Acceleration. Check Engine.

I have a 1994 Mercury Villager, automatic trans. Last night, it snowed a few inches. I started my car, having run it not even an hour before, and the check engine light was on. It is having problems accelerating. I hit the gas pedal like normal, and the van barely moves. I will floor the gas, and it slowly creeps up to 25 mph. Once in the 20mph range it accelerates very quickly..like normal, but my speed will start to drop, even while flooring the pedal.
I'm not sure, but I think that I do drive under 1/4 of a tank of gas ALL the time, which I know...is no good.
But, I think the gunk/water and whatnot in the gas tank is causing this problem, but I'm not sure.
Any help would be greatly appriciated.
Thank you,
Patrick

get the code read. that will help loads in finding out what's wrong.
Autozone usually reads code for free. (because of the year (pre-1996) call around to make sure)
there could be a bad throttle position sensor, among other things. the codes will definitely help figure that out.
