Improve 2000 Sable gas mileage

We have a 2000 Sable v regular V6, non 24 valve. It has 150K on it. And our gas mileage has started to drop dramatically. We used to get around 27 MpG hwy. But now it's down to 22.

I've made sure tire pressure is ok. Oil is changed 5w-30 synthetic and air filter is new/clean. What more obvious things are there I can do myself?

I know the tranny fluid is overdue for a change. Could that cause bad mileage?

TIA!

Instead of throwing parts at it. Have a diagnostic done on it. Sure it's cost some money, but so does buying parts that don't fix the problem. But if I was going to guess, one that comes to mind is a lazy Oxygen sensor, especially if it has 150k on it. Another could be a bad coolant sensor. An overdue transmission fluid change wouldn't do it.

Funny you'd mention oxygen sensor. On a long trip a week ago the check engine light came on. When I had the car hooked up to an analyzer it came back with code P1131 - bank 1 lean. It doesn't run bad, no rough idle or anything. And actually the gas mileage was decent ~ 27 MpG hwy. I'll post more details in another thread.
