1992 GM with 72000 miles & transmission prob.

Hi All,

I'm new to this forum. We have a '92 Grand Marquis with 72,000 miles. A few years ago I inherited it from my late sister. It looked and ran like new. Then I gave it to my other sister. She had it a very short time and without warning the transmission started not moving the car in drive, but reversed okay. My first thought is the trans. is burned up, but never had any problem before and the car had been well maintained. Now the car has sat a couple of years in my sister's driveway, under a cover and it will crank over, but not start. It's been awhile since I tried to start it so I don't remember if the fuel pump was running or not. Some guy told me that there could be a problem with a sensor on the transmission which may be causing the trans. problem. The fluid does not smell burnt, but looks dirty. Once I get it going I will change the fluid and filter. Could that cause my trans. problem or a sensor perhaps. With the no starting, I'm thinking the fuel strainer and pump may be gummed up with the old gas turning to varnish. By the way, my sister is giving the car back to me, so I'm anxious to get it back to its former pristene condition. Any help/ advice on any of these problems is of great help. Thanks, George

check to see the year on the car... the early 1992s were made with AOD transmissions... when they were equipped with the AOD in it, they had a cable that hooked to the throttle body. if that is disconnected, then the transmission is fried. that cable controls the pressure and with it not hooked up runs too low of pressure burning the transmission.

the running issue you might have not starting can be the relay for the fuel pump went bad located under hood on driver side, the 20 amp fuse went bad on passenger side under hood, the inertia switch got hit that is located in the trunk on driver side or the pump is shot

Thank you so much for your help. The door sticker states it is a P code which is an AODE transmission rather than the T code AOD transmission. Any ideas on the problem with an AODE transmission? Thanks George3405

try wiggling the shifter in different positions and see if it will engage in any forward gears. Sometimes the selector does not line up in the window on the dash cluster.

My '93 GM has the same AODE transmission and did the exact same thing. Bit the bullet and paid $1500 to have it overhauled, flushed and a new torque converter installed. It runs like a top now, but I don't know for sure what happened to it to cause the problem.

What struck me most funny was that reverse would work but forward gears wouldn't do a thing.
