'76 Grand Marquis Carb help needed!

Hi all,

I finally got to the point where I was ready to fire the 'ol girl up. She fire up, and began screaming. It appears that the electric choke is stuck on the carburetor, and I admit I am rather stupid around carbs. Doing some digging I think Holley made these, and its a 9510. Can I just disconnect the electric choke to make her run at the correct idle, or am I going to have to remove the entire carburetor and have this thing rebuilt, or what? Thanks in advance for any help. -Dave

Well, I disconnected the electric choke...but still no love. Fired up and seemed like it wanted to go to red-line. I've got the carb off and I'm going to take it to go get rebuilt. Maybe there is something trashed up inside from sitting in storage for so long, or the float is stuck. Who knows.

As an aside...I posted up something in the welcome area with pictures of my Merc and got a message back that said it needed to be approved by a moderator. Still hasn't been. Is this forum that dead?

Holley Carb Rebuild

Hello, and welcome to the Mercury Forums --
I have a lot of experience with Holley carbs, but there's no way to diagnose a particular problem over the interwebs.
You said that your carb is "a 9510" -- I think that is the Ford part number for a carburetor.
Holley's model numbers are like "4150", or "4160".
I hope you found a mechanic with a lot of Holley experience -- there aren't many good Holley men around these days.
For your street machine, the best bet is to restore the carb to as-new condition, rather than attempt any modifications or "tricks" to "improve the performance".
Holley carbs work best when set up according to Holley specs -- which may not be easy to find for that old carb.

Your pictures are up -- go to "Community", click on "Pictures" -- there are about 20 pix of your ride -- nice !!

Looked at your pix -- seems to me like you have the huge 460 cu.in. engine.
Looks exactly like the 460 that I had in a '75 Lincoln Town Coupe.
IF you have the 460, the stock carb is a FORD/Holley -- NOT a regular Holley model.
The "9510" is the Ford part number for a carburetor -- NOT the carb model number.
The correct model number for your 4-barrel carb is -- F4-4350.
Rebuilt carb is available at ROCKAUTO.COM -- about $250, plus $50 core charge.
You could rebuild it yourself, but It may be hard to find a rebuild KIT for that carb -- they were very rare.
IF you have the 400 cu. in. engine, the carb is a 2-barrel model -- easily identified.
Rebuilt 2-barrel carbs are also available at ROCKAUTO,COM.
If and when you get that beast running, be prepared for some really bad gas mileage -- like 10-12 mpgs. on a GOOD day !!
Keep me posted -- I may be able to help !!
