96 Marquis with knocking noise
 

I have a 96 Marquis and I ran out of oil on the tollway. After I was able to get the oil change done I start hearing a kncking noise and as I accelerate it gets louder. I hope I have not thrown a rod and it is only the oil pump gone bad. My question is could the oil pump cause that type of noise?

I'd say a bad rod bearing that wore while running it on very low/no oil for even a short time.
