I have a ex cop car that sits a little high. it is a 1998 MGM. I am on a budget so new coils are out of the question unless I can get used mustang coils to fit. will mustang coils fit? If I cut them with the sawzall, is one full coil loop to much to lower it 1/2 or 2 inches or should I cut half of a coil loop. would like to drop it 2 inch in the front and 1/2 inch in the rear .

 

if the rear bumper isnt torn, get straps to hold it up and out of the wind from under the car. the rear plastic bumper acts like a sail and catches the wind and will get torn up. i will check into the coils for ya.

 

the bumpers are solid brother. the car just sits an extra inch or so higher then a regular stockMGM. since it was a police car, I am guessing for ground clearance they raised it when the cops do a U turn on the expressway over the divider or something.

You could probably get a good deal on some used ones from a junk yard or ebay. Even on a tight budget I wouldn't suggest cutting the springs, you might end up with a lop sided car or poor drive ability. They do make some adjusters for springs though, I'll put a link at the bottom for those. But you should be able to get a set of them from the junk yard for under $100.

I was thinking. if I was going to lower it or change the springs, I wanted to lower it lower then the stock height. I would not want to put stock spring on it from a donar car if I am going through the trouble of changing them. This is why I was wondering if mustang springs would fit since those cars sit a little lowere then the MGM when they are both stock and used lowere springs are redily available.

You can cut variable rate coil springs...but it is going to alter the ride a lot. Cutting a full coil off your springs will lower it a little more than 2"....and it will ride a good bit rougher since you are effectively raising the spring rate.


If you decide to cut them....make sure your have them on a bench in pairs (front pair and rear pair) and make your measurements exact. You don't want a lopsided ride or mismatched spring rates.

Not specifically I don't. If I were to guess I would say yes they probably will fit, but they are designed for a lower, lighter car. That means they would probably drop the ride more than you are looking for. In the neighborhood of 3-4" I would guess.

 

would that require a spindle lowering kit or something if it dropped that much?

 

Dunno. It does seem like it would jack up the steering geometry.
