choking,sputtering, gasping- Bad fuel pump?
1) 2001 GM- cruising speed at 40-50 mph car is choking bad, acts like it is getting no gas, engine is sputtering and the car is struggling to move, but if I give it some throttle it will stop sputtering and goes like its suppose to. Cruising at 50-60 no problem.
2) Cold start in the morning the car fires right up, high RPMs. Levels off and drives fine. Warm start car takes 3 turn overs to start up, but always starts. A guy told me on the warm start turn ignition 3 times without starting and on the 4th try to start it....bingo fires right up every time. Any suggestions? Is the fuel pump bad? Thanks for any advice you can give. |
Choking, Sputtering, Gasping ??
The problems you describe suggest a worn-out Throttle Position Sensor.
I got a genuine Motorcraft T.P.S. at a good price from RockAuto.com . ** Disconnect battery NEGATIVE terminal before performing ANY electrical work !! ** The Fuel Pumps are practically bullet-proof, but a new Fuel Filter MAY be necessary. Unless you KNOW that the Fuel Filter is fresh, REPLACE IT, and be sure to check the direction of fuel flow. Good Luck ! https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mer...d8bb92bac3.jpg 95 MERC Engine Bay |
Thank you for your quick reply. I like your words that fuel pump is bullet proof....I watched a you tube yesterday and thought....oh my. So, TPS I will change and fuel filter i replaced about a year ago, but with my issues I will do it again. And I have seen the directional arrow on that fuel filter!! Thanks again Merc. Kevin

About those Fuel Pumps -- Most in-tank fuel pump failures are caused by the pump overheating due to too low of a fuel level in the tank.
MANY people run their tanks down to the "E" before re-fueling, and the pumps need fuel in the tank to keep them cool. '92 and other early Panthers had fuel-return lines that put unused fuel back into the tank, which CAN cause fuel delivery problems. To avoid such problems, I always fill the tank when it gets down to 1/4th, which leaves a plenty of fuel in there to keep the pump cool on cross-desert runs during the Summer. Heat is a big factor here in the desert, and I've made several modifications to The 95 MERC to combat the heat's harmful effects, such as a B&M Transmission Cooler, Bosch Series 3 Fuel Injectors, Cast aluminum Differential Cover, and enhanced Air Conditioner upgrades.
