My 98 Marquis was running hot and then cooling off and then hot....I saw signs of leakage around the thermostat housing so I replaced the thermostat and o-ring. Turns out the plastic piece the thermo housing is bolted to has a hole in it. How do I get that plastic thingamabob off?

Well, I'll answer my own question: it is a cracked plastic intake manifold. If yours hasn't cracked yet, it will. From the dealer, the revised replacement is $600 and $300 labor. I found an aftermarket one for $200 and I may do it myself.

Can we ask where did you get the aftermarket one at?

Custom Nustang of Florida was their name I think. Very helpful. You can also purchase one from NAPA or Advance Auto but be sure to get one with the aluminum coolant crossover. All are priced around $200. The one I ordered comes with gaskets, alt. bracket,etc.. I will find the link and post it.

Here you go.

http://stores.ebay.com/Custom-Mustan...-Florida_W0QQs sPageNameZVIStoreHeaderLinksQQtZkm ?

You can also call to order if you're like me and don't like e-bay. Seller told me to call him if I installed it myself and had any questions. Wow!Intake should arrive tomorrow (2 days after order from Fla. to N.C.) just as promised judging by the tracking from Fedex.

For those new to the problem, all plastic intakes from 96-2001 run hot coolant through the plastic intake causing cracks and leaks. The fix is a revised version with an aluminum coolant crossover: $600 from dealer, $200 aftermarket, or around $300 for the PI version that requires some RTV or adaptor plates for non PI heads(pre 99). There is also a question of hood clearance with the PI on non PI cars.

Woohoo!New aftermarket intake went on with no problems. No leaks of any kind. Also had mechanic install new plugs and belt that I provided. Labor was $225. Intake was $216 for a total of $441. Beats the dealer price of $1,000!

It musy have needed the spark plugs (98,800 miles) because it seems a little peppier now.

B.T.W., the lawsuit against Ford is scheduled for final approval on Oct.5. If approved, Ford will pay owner refund or give owner over $700 for refund if no receipts are available. The lawsuit only goes back for seven years though, so '98 owners (me) are on the borderline depending on the date the warranty went into effect. '96, '97 owners are screwed.
