Last time I used my cruise control was about 6 months ago worked like a charm, tried it the other day no luck, when i hit ON i see SPEED CONTROL on the dash yet when i hit SET I get nothing (car just drops speed).

Vehicle is a 97 Marquis with 72K Miles, overall pretty good shape besides a few minor quirks like this cruise control.

I did recently get that recall done (something to do with the cruise control switch) and was HOPING it might help fix the cruise (silly i know) but was hoping (no luck on that).

Anyone that might know what to check or what commonly acts up on these that I can check (without a big service repair bill) I would really appreciate any help or suggestions of what it might be where to check what to check etc.

I have a 5 hr drive to do this weekend and no cruise will really bum me out, but also with gas prices so high i can''t afford to just take it in to get fixed AND still go on the trip...

I did check the manual and found the fuse diagram confirmed fuse 6 position (for speed control) was full and fine, (also connected to clock which works) so at least I have one step confirmed and of course the recall has been done so thats 2 things i know are ok...

I will check into it thursday and let you know by thursday night. Hopefully it is enough time for you to fix it.

No problem brother. The important thing is to fix it the correct way and a cheap way. Don''t go off purchasing new things before trouble shooting. You are doing the right thing by trouble shooting the problem. I will ask a few guys if they know a common problem with this that is a easy fix

My 98 had same problem, turned out to be the switchthat sets the speed.

Mustangdave,

Is that switch under the hood (easy enough to reach and swap) or is that the switch in the actual steering column?

Did you do it or the dealership, just trying to gauge cost and if i can possibly fix it vs taking in.

I found out. It is not the switch from the column becasue the light is turning on the dash. It most likely is the switch under the hood. Check for a bad connection and possibly clean out the connector with electrical cleaner. Also check the linkage and make sure it is just not stuck. move it back and forth. Check the switches to see if you are getting a current throught them. I am not sure about the voltage you need but it should be more then 2.5 volts for something like this. I hope this helps.

Thanks on that, i am not exactly sure where all that stuff is under the hood to be honest but will gobuy a manual or try to find some diagrams online here tonight.
