I currently have a 89 grand marquis and we finally got the timing set to what we think its suppost to be. It idles fine but when you goto press on the gas it bogs down and it will shut the car down does anyone have any ideas? Please help.[img]smileys/smiley19.gif[/img]

Timing is an essential issue on every car. Before we start guessing on what else it could be, you should verify the timing first.


Everything else would be a waste of time and money to try, it could be just on top of a off-timing.

well we have the timming set but for some reason it still has no power when you press on the pedal it will bog the engine down but if you slowly press it it will rev up any ideas?

Well, one issue could be not getting enough fuel. If you press on the accelerator, air and fuel is injected/directed into the carb.


Unless your air filter is completely clogged, it could be that your engine is getting a larger amount of air, but not enough gasoline, and therefore stalls. However, if you press the pedal gently, the fuel flow seems to be just about enough to get it reved up.


Your's is a carb, right? Check the jets inside your carb. They look like a golden fishnet, and are most often screwed on. They might be dirty.

no it is a fuel injected we are going to try and change the fuel filter and see what happens.

Fuel injected? What about the fuel pump? Remember, this car is almost 20 years old. Does the pump deliver sufficient?


An easy way to check if you are getting enough fuel (regardless what item in your fuel delivery, pump or filter, is bad) is to disconnect the fuel line up front and start the car for a second or 2. See if there is consistent fuel flow.


Be carefully doing this. The fuel line will have quite some fuel shooting out of it. Have a towel wrapped around it, and a container to catch the fuel. Don't let it go near electric components or the headers.


Next step would be the fuel injectors. After so many years, they might be dirty and don't spray anymore the way they were suppose to. You can give it a try with injection cleaner.
