I own a 2000 GM LS and occasionaly the engine stalls out just after starting. It sounds as if the idle is running way too low.

While driving, the car will stall everytime I come to a stop. This does not happen all of the time but when it does happen it lasts for several stops.

Does anyone have any idea what would cause this?

Thanks.

Try cleaning or replacing the ICV (idle control valve)

The Idle Air Control Valve is the most likely cause for the stalling problem and it's not just the Grand Marquis. Other cars and trucks with the 4.6L V8 are afflicted with the sticking valve. Replacement of the valve is the common fix. My 2002 Grand Marquis stalls occasionally when the engine is warm and I shift into reverse. This will get fixed at the next oil change.

Is this also a problem for the 5.0 merc's too? My 87 tends to stall sometimes when im parallel parking, or has a rough idle.

something that is being excluded here is that if a vehicle isnt properly tuned up and maintained, it can also cause a stalling condition...

The thing is that it has been maintained very well the entire life of the car (referring to my 87 MGM), and I did a full tuneup2 months agousing only Ford Motorcraftparts. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, filter, 02 sensor, cleaned injectors and TB, etc. So maintence isn'tthe problem for me at least, since I takeverygood care of all my cars.

The problem is that the car stalls out sometimes when goinginto reverse, or when put into driveafterjust being started. It has a rough idle sometimeswhen at a stop light, and does a very weird searching for idle when its started for a couple of seconds. I thought it was a vacumm leak but couldn't find one. The thing is I can't tell ifits the TPS or the Idle Air control valve.

i dont think that it would be the TPS...since its only at idle, it sounds like an idle air issue

Try looking at your EGR valve as well. The EGR pintle in the valve can become dirty and not seat well. When this happens, its almost same as a very bad intake leak-- engine has an internal vacuum leak and runs very lean. Instead of cleaning the EGR valve, ifit turns out to be bad, just replace it.
