Fuel smell when parked with full gas tank
Getting a strong odor of gas when the car is parked in the garage and the fuel tank is at 7/8 to full. Any help tracing the cause would be gratefully appreciated. This issue started after a mechanic replaced the fuel pump. Smell goes away once fuel level reduces to 3/4 or less. Warranty for fuel pump has expired. I usually don't notice the smell until it is left in garage overnight
Details: 2007 Mercury Marquis 44K miles I do not overfill the tank Car runs fine No obvious gas leaking or on the ground No Codes No problems filling tank - gas flows in easily Thanks very much, Jim |
If you just recently had the pump replaced, I would take it back to the shop. If this all started after pump replacement, you should have taken it back long ago, not after the warranty had run out.You don't want to mess around with this and get it looked at right away. He could have messed up something at the tank including the seal at the pump or the venting system. Since the car is 12 years old, you could have a small tank leak developing at the top of the tank. About all you can do is make sure there is no issue with your gas cap.

Thanks Raski. I appreciate your thoughts and level of urgency. It was owned by my ailing elderly father at the time of warranty. Shortly after the fuel pump replacement it went into storage and became a low priority. Sure wish I had go involved back then.
