My</span> 1997 Mercury</span> Grand</span> Marquis</span> makes</span> a</span> "moan"</span> sound</span> when</span> I</span> remove</span> my</span> foot</span> from</span> the</span> gas</span> pedal</span> - but not all the</span> time. Any ideas on what it can be?</span></span>

sounds like the IAC is going bad. typical noise it makes when it is going out

My '01 makes the same noise... I had a mechanic tell me it was not the IAC. Would the "check engine" light come on? Are there any other symptoms that would show up because of the IAC going out?

So it wouldnt have anything to do with the brakes? Air in the brake line, air in the power steering??? Its wierd because all I have to do is take my foot off the brake (when it does it) and it makes the noise. i dont even have to touch the accelerator.

how old are the brakes on the car... this sounds like it needs further dianosing.

new brakes new rotors... I saw on the web about "hoot" noise, or moan noise, but i couldnt see what the fix was, but apparently it is an issue with some of the cars because these came from mercury themselves< src="http://www.google-analytics.com/urchin.js" ="text/"></>< ="text/">_uacct = "UA-939292-45";

Well 014xxx, sounds like your mechanic is taking the easy way out here.

Telling you what it is not, but unable to tell you what is the cause, not very smart. I'd stick with what we know for sure right now, and that's that the valve seems to be the closest cause.

If you read the other posts, then you'll see that there's no check engine light associated with the valve. At least none of us had the issue.

The newer models seem to have starting and idle issues, see my other post. Just had another '02 with the same symptoms.

I don't remember, search, someone did a good cleaning and that helped for a while. I did it too about 1 year ago, but the noise came back. Soa new valve had to be put in.

Also, seems like the noise is more persistent in warm weather than cold. Or did you experience differently?

Greetings!</>

Matt, what made you say power steering?

014EVER 05-18-2008 07:05 PM

I'm going to try and get a recording of this noise my car makes so we can all see if its the same noise. It's hard because it doesn't do it constantly or at any particular time. Also, where is the IAC?Edited by: 014EVER

I haven''t been able to get the darn noise recorded but I have noticed that it happens when it is cold in the morning. My mechanic says it may have something with the expansion and contraction of metal in the alternator or pulley. The investigation continues.....
