Noise in suspension when turning sharp left or right
I just bought a 98 grand marquis and I notice it makes a loud noise when you turn very sharp right or left at slow speeds, like when turning out of the drive way or out of a parking lot. I inspected the steering and suspension and it all appears fine. The only thing I seen was the boots were bad on the sway bar links and I replaced the passenger side and still the same noise.
Any ideas? |
what type of noise is it? a squealing sound? a groan?
did you check the tension of the belt to the power steering pump? also, if you hold the steering on the lock (extreme right or left) of any car, the power steering will groan about it. |
i have the same noise in my 01. its more of a pop. all that i can see seems to be ok.

I'm pretty sure of what your describing.
It is the turn stop's, you need to apply some grease to both halfs on both sides. I'll try to find a picture to show you what I mean |
The dirty lookin parts are the one's that need to be greased

I've tried that on mine. didnt help. My noise is only on the left and clunks like a loose part during full left with a bump(doesn't have to be a big bump, a 1 inch stick will do it). Sounds more like a loose part.
I don't think it was there before replacing 4 ball joints , and half the tie rod ends. |
sounds like you may have a ball joint that's not greased properly then or is defective.
|
Defective ball joint, dang,
changing those bums was a real project. The press I rented didn't really seem to have the proper cup selection. Had to keep resetting, keep resetting, took all day to get 2 lowers in. |
yeah.. the lowers area real buggers to get done. You may also have some weak bushings that may be allowing the control arm to bump the frame or bolts. There may be a few other points to check as well, but my brain is not picking them out at the moment.

promising idea.
When the weather gets warmer will look into it. When the control arm bushing went bad on the chevy van, there was no question, just grab the spindle and jerk, no major effort required. These at least aren't that sloppy. But could explain the wandering it does on the freeway |
Sounds like a bushing gone bad somewhere,it's fine throughout travel until the bushing cannot contain it then it pops and hit's metal/metal.
Suspension issues are hard to diag online, when involving noises that is. Best bet is to look through the paper and find a place offering free alignment checks. Part of checking the alignment includes finding any bad suspension parts, cause any of them being out of spec must be replaced before alignment can be done. Alot could be found out by simply haveing someone drive the vehicle slowly while you walk next to it at full lock-should at least be able to narrow it down a bit. Also try jacking up the front end and recreating the noise while looking at the suspension going from lock to lock. It might not make the noise with suspension unloaded, which can tell you something also. |
My friend had a Pontiac Grand Am which would make this noise when turning hard left or right from his front, passenger side.
The mechanic said it was his strut mount and that if you had someone stand there and look at it while you turn the wheel, you'd see the strut jump/turn. He said it really wasn't a big deal and it'd be more trouble to fix than it was worth. |
but a grand marquis doesn't have struts. It has springs. and both ends are static (non rotating parts). One end is in the frame and the other on the control arm. The rotating parts are around the ball joints and bushings. It's a little different beast than struts.
