It all depends on when your car was made.. The 4.6 had a different bolt pattern for the transmission.. If it was made before February 1992 you can bolt some other engines to your transmission.. If it was built after, only the 4.6 (or 5.4L which is similar) will bolt to it..
The build date is on a sticker inside the driver door..

If I remeber correct you mentioned that your car had a 1995 engine installed in it.. So I would guess that it was built after 2/92.. Meaning unless you change the transmission only the 4.6 will bolt to it..

Changing to an ealier engine will also involve alot more than just bolting to the transmission.. You'll need the proper motor mounts (Actually I think they will have to be fabricated as the 4.6 cars hade their own motor mounts) You'll need an oil pan that will clear the crossmember, exhaust will have to be modified, you;ll need accessories and brackets (A/C Power steering, Alternator) that will clear the hood and connect up properly..
THe 4.6 engine is very short height wise, most of the earler Ford engines are taller, and will have hood clearance issues unless you find the proper intakes.. If you opt to keep your fuel injection, there will be some wiring harness changes needed as well..

The 4.6 isn;t all that complicated really.. The overhead cams and timing chains tend to scare people, but in reality it's no more complicated than say an earlier 5.0 with pushrods, rockers, distributors that turn a small shaft to drive the oil pump.. Not to mention all the emission control stuff used on earlier engines.. Unfortunately the 4.6 can be a bit mroe pricey to get parts for..
