thought this would help...

Axle codes
Open rear/Trac-Lok/Ratio #
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
G&nbsp ;/ H / 2.26
B&nbsp ;/ C / 2.47
8&nbsp ;/ M / 2.73
7&nbsp ;/ ------- / 3.07
Y&nbsp ;/ Z / 3.08
4&nbsp ;/ D / 3.42
F&nbsp ;/ R&nbsp ;/ 3.45
5&nbsp ;/ E&nbsp ;/ 3.27
6&nbsp ;/ W / 3.73
2&nbsp ;/ K&nbsp ;/ 3.55
A&nbsp ;/ ------- / 3.63
J&nbsp ;/ ------- / 3.85
you will find the rear axle code located on your door sticker under code of AX
my 1987 Grand Marquis sedan has a 3.27 trac-lok, my 1987 2 door Crown Vic has a 3.27 open and my 1987 Crown Vic has a 3.08 open. my 1987 2 door Crown Vic will be getting 3.73 gears in it since it will be used at the track. 3.55 gears make your car really move even if it isnt modified. hope this helps some of you out
How do you go about changing the gear ratio?
87_Crown_Vic Jan 25, 2008 08:43 AM
if you have the know how, you can do it yourself, or have it taken to a mechanic to have it pretty much rebuilt and change the gearing. depending on the gears you use, you will need a different plastic gear for the transmission that connects to the speedo cable. i will post more on the rear gears and type needed.
As much usefull info as possible would be helpfull. If this is something that has to be done with the trans dropped I will not be able to do it (live in an apt. complex, can't make it happen here). If this is the case offer me a recomendation as I am going to get mine rebuilt hopefully by next week and i can have the shop install at the same time they do the other work. Thanks and I greatly appreciate sharing the knowledge.
the gear ratio i am speaking of is in the rearend of the car... nothing to do with the transmission.
DirtySouthMerc Jan 25, 2008 03:03 PM
Got ya'... Was confused when you mentioned the speedometer cable into the trans. I would like to go with the 3.55 gears upon further review. Is there a recomended brand (ford racing, superior gears, etc?) I was quoted roughly $1500.00 to fully rebuild my trans, install a stage 2 TransGo, A+ Servo, and replace with that gear ratio.
the speedo gear is in the transmission, but that is a simple job of removing the speedo cable and changing the gear inside where the cable goes.
