Serpentine Belt
Hello, Rich, and welcome to the Mercury Forums --
It is not necessary to remove the fan shroud -- the belt can be replaced by working carefully. Check the Belt Tensioner bearing for side-play. There should be NONE. Replace belt tensioner if in doubt.. Belt -- Gates RPM Series -- #K060980RPM. Tensioner -- Gates Drive-Align -- #38386. These are premium-quality parts that will give years of reliable performance. I used them in my '95 MERC Restoration, and recommend them because -- If the belt breaks or comes off, you are dead. Period. Yes, it IS easier to change belt and tensioner with the fan shroud removed, but it's not really necessary to remove it. Word of caution: Be SURE that the new belt is properly aligned in the pulley grooves. |
Thanks.
