video game steering
 

I just bought a 2002 grand marquis. I really like it except for the video game feel of the steering. Is there any way to cut down the boost and make it more like a real car?
A clarification of my question. The steering is stable and accurate. It is just over boosted and has no resistance or weight to it. Is there any way to make it have some feeling of connection or weight.

Congratulations on purchasing a Mercury Grand Marquis -- a fine automobile.
May you enjoy it for many years, as I have with my own 95 MERC.
Regarding your wayward power steering -- I'll assume that the car has been driven for several years, and maintained by it's previous owner. That means that no one knows FOR SURE what type of fluid has been added to the reservoir, which is critical.
I suggest that you drain out the system, and re-fill it with the FORD-recommended MERCON V type (I use the Castrol brand) of Automatic Transmission Fluid. Accept no substitutes ;>;)
Filling your reservoir with the proper fluid will make your power steering as good as it will get.
The OTHER main cause of erratic steering feel in our Mercurys is improper Wheel Alignment.
While most manufacturers specify a call for Positive Toe-In, our Mercs require a NEGATIVE setting, or Toe-Out !!
I have made the mistake of NOT getting a proper Computer-Assisted Alignment, whereby the vehicle year, make, and model are entered into the computer and it automatically "knows" your vehicle's proper settings, with + or - indicated.
After the botched alignment, the car was skittish, and behaved badly. I paid no mind, as my brand-new Goodyears were being ground away. At that time, I decided to completely rebuild the front suspension, and when finished, I took it in for a ComputerAlignment at the Goodyear Tire Store, where the experienced technician set my wheels "to the nominals", thus insuring an ideal setting and spot-on steering characteristics. The technician earned his $20 tip.
Unfortunately, the previous poor settings resulted in my grinding off about 20,000 miles worth of rubber from those Goodyears.
But hey, I learned my lesson -- Computer Alignments ONLY.
The resultant excellent steering, handling, and vehicle control were well worth the time and money spent.

I would check alignment to see where you at..Too much negative caster can cause what you describe. Caster is not a tire wearing angle.Whether yours is adjustable, I am not sure. Many cars are not.
The suspension and steering systems were redesigned for 2003 and thereafter..The steering has a tighter, more sportier feel with the rack and pinion steering and the suspension is somewhat stiffer without the soft, "foaty" feel.. I would bet from your description, it sounds like your desire would be what the models starting in 2003 have to offer.

Dump it and get a 2005 or newer. Or better yet, get a car that is still being made.

I don't know much about steering video games. Even though people have been playing Xbox games since 2005, I only started getting interested in this topic a year ago.
