Default Mercury Mariner Starter

I replaced the 3.0L engine in my 2010 mercury mariner.i bolted the original flywheel onto the new motor, installed it, got it all lined up and toghtened to the torque converter, installed the started, went to start it, and it jammed. The started is now around .060-.080 too deep in the flywheel. I have never known the 3.0 to need shims on the starter. It just mounts flat on top of the transmission. Does anyone have any idea what might have went wrong or what I need to do? Thank you everyone!
