2004 Monterey camshaft position sensor & synchronizer question????

So my mom's 2004 Mercury Monterey 4.2 started to develop a miss/hesitation, and got so bad that the car would totally stall out if you tried to accelerate when the car was cold.

Took it to the mechanic and they said it was a camshaft position sensor. They are trying to charge $800 to replace the sensor, the synchronizer, and to resurface the rotors.

I don't really have a problem with that if it is necessary to change at the synchronizer at the same time as the sensor, but if it only need's the sensor changed then there's no way I'm paying $800 dollars for a $50 dollar part that I can put in myself in less than an hour.

So do Ford/Mercury with this problem usually need both the synchronizer and the sensor changed, or can I just replace the sensor and be done with it?

Thanks in advance.
