Hello all, I am in the process of helping a friend re-wire a 54 merc Monterey and have one question that seems to baffle us.

Being only 4 yrs old when this car was made, I am wondering if the backup lights were tied into the headlight circuit, so the would only work when the headlights or parking lights were turn on ???????

Now a days its on its own circuit and works anytime you put the vehicle in reverse for safety reasons, but back in the day there weren't as many cars and was wondering if there a different setup?

Thanks < =text/> _uacct = "UA-939292-45"; urchinTracker(); </>< src="http://www.google-analytics.com/urchin.js" =text/> </>< =text/> _uacct = "UA-939292-45"; urchinTracker(); </>

Hi, I understand that but was the wiring tied into the headlight system. It seems that thatit is only way we can get the reverse lights to work. The light switch has to be on when we put the car in reverse for the backup lights to come on . If we can turn light switch off the reverse lights go out also. Do we have some wiring crossed somewhere??????

Thanks

sounds like you have a wire crossed someplace. should be a easy way to wire from power to the transmission reverse type switch that activates it when put in reverse

Greetings, I am also busy now trying to fathom out how the back up lamps and wiring works on my 54 2dr HT Monterey. I cannot see where the back up switch is situated. This particular vehicle is equipped with a Merc O Matic transmission. I do have an original wiring diagram and the schematics from what I can see makes no reference to the back up lamps or back up lamp switch. The diagram only shows the wiring to the tail lamps. Could the the starter lock out switch on the column linkages double as the switch for the back up lamp? It references whether the vehicle is in Park or Neutral in order to start the engine, and possibly when reverse is selected would initiate the back up lamps. Interestingly in the Parts Catalogue it shows the bulb and socket in the tail light assy for the back up lamp however I cannot find a back up lamp switch anywhere. It's gotta be there somewhere.
