Simple question. Are they the same? I see lots of gas tanks listed for the 56 Ford and none for the 56 Mercury. I have a Monterey 2 door hardtop on which I wish to install a new gas tank. So are they identical or can I at least make it work?

 

The Ford 2-door hardtop should have the exact same tank as the Monterey 2-door hardtop.
RockAuto.com has the Ford 2-door hardtop tank.

 

Logic would say just that, they are the same. However I checked with a claimed Ford/Mercury supplier and their catalog lists two part numbers for the '55/'56 Ford fuel tank. The '55 has one part number and the '56 has another. Again logic would suggest Ford would have used the same fuel tank both years and not used two different part numbers. If the '56 Ford shared the same fuel tank with the '56 Mercury the supplier should have listed that. Thus my confusion. Further investigation is warranted.
