Hi all, I currently own a 2001 Ford Explorer. It has 104,000 miles, but is in pretty good condition. No mechanical issues and looks darn good as well.

I have an option to buy a 2003 Mountaineer Premier from my parents. it has 80K miles, and is in good condition as well. Needs brakes, a/c recharge, but nothing major. It''s being offered for $6000.

My question, would I be a dummy to sell my Explorer for the Mountaineer? I''ve had no issues at all with the Explorer. My parents claim the Mountaineer is also in great mechanical shape, but as I told my wife, I don''t know what I don''t know.

Would appreciate thoughts on this proposed deal.

Personally, I wouldn't. If the vehicle I'm driving already runs great and has no troubles, keep it.

FYI: if the A/C system needs a recharge, it means there's a leak somewhere and it will continue to get worse until you have to replace parts and that gets expensive.

Key word you used is upgrade. The Moutaineer would be the next step up, luxury wise, then on to the Lincoln Navigator. Kind of like the Crown Vic, to the Grand Marq, to the Town Car. You have to weigh your options and know what you like. You would be giving up your higher mileage, trusty, more rugged Explorer for a lower mileage, needs a little work, but more luxury oriented Moutaineer. If there is any off-roading involved, then keep the Ford I say. If not, prepare for the MPG drop if the Moutaineer is a V-8 w/AWD. What is the Ford's primary function? Daily driver, soccer mom SUV, tower/hauler, etc?
