Default 2005 Mountaineer Parking Brake???? HELP.

K... I drove my wife's 2005 AWD Mountaineer with a 4.0L yesterday and found out the parking / emergency brake is not working. She told me that it never really worked since we bought it. When parked, I always set the brake on my vehicle. Well, on the Mountaineer, after setting the parking brake then releasing the brake pedal, the car rolls slightly till it hits the gears. I do not like this. Especially since we've got a 4 year old and another on the way. The car should stay put and not move at all when parked. I then mashed on the parking brake and let it lurch while running in drive. It is not catching. It only seems like it's slightly grabbing when in drive. However, while in reverse, it doesn't seem to do anything...just freely moves even with the parking brake to the floor. I've checked and there is a bunch of tension on the cable...it just seems like it needs a bit more.

Anyway, I took a look at it this afternoon. It's got disks all the way around. It appears to have an odd lever parking brake system on the rear. Fairly simple looking...just pulls a cable to each rear cailper. Well, where the heck in the adjustment???? I can't seem to find anything concerning it....only steps to replace the cables. Can anyone point me in the right direction to properly adjusting this parking/emergency brake? Any tips????

Thanks a bunch,
Robert

usually the adjustment (if any) is either on the parking brake assembly itself (under the dash) or on the Y connector under the vehicle where the cable from the brake meats with the cables that go to the brakes. If there isn't any adjustment there, there may be adjusters on the individual brakes. most of the time it's a nut on the Y connector.
