97 Mountaineer Running Issues

I used the search feature, but couldn't find a relation to my problem.
My friend has a 97 Mercury Mountaineer it is an autotragic w/ the 5.0L All Wheel Drive
and every time you put it into drive or reverse it dies, even if you
were to kick up the RPMs then drop it into gear it will still die. It
idles fine the Transmission Fluid is pink a little stinky, but not
burnt. Can someone help me out and point me in the right direction.

Thanks for the help, but I believe I figured it out. I think the solenoid in the transmission is bad.< src="http://www.google-analytics.com/urchin.js" ="text/"></>< ="text/">_uacct = "UA-939292-45";
