My 2002 AWD 6 Cyl Mountainer just logged 37000 miles, and the "Service Engine Soon" lite comes on. Per Ford dealer, I need to have DPFE Sensor replaced. Is this about the time this is supposed to go?, or can someone give me the low down?

Those sensors have been failing prematurely. Some vehicles had a extended warranty on that one particular part for 2 yrs past the end of your 3 yr warranty and an extra 24000 miles. Have your dealer check to see if your vehicle is eligble for program 02m01.

Thanks alot, the dealer agreed to replace part at no charge. But this is what they suggested I should have done:


Emissions Cleaning


Replace gas filter


Transmission service w/ filter & gasket


Again, I have 37,000 mi on 2002 Mountaineer. Is any of this really needed, or just fluff.

Well im not really sure what a emissions cleaning is but as for the fuel filter replacement and transmission service I would recommend that. And coming from a man that works at a dealer it is not fluff these are things that should be completed.


However the transmission service i would recommend flushing the fluid but not necessarily need the filter replaced. At my dealership we offer a flush that connects directly to the transmission cooler lines that way you dont take any chances with causing leaks at the transpan and the filters are metal now a days so a good flushing system will clean them out.


The fuel filter may have a little higher price tag on it than you would expect but it is located above the fuel tank behind 2 covers and not easily accessable.

I sprung for the fuel filter, believe it's a good investment. But now car stalls outoften. The ride feels like if I don't push the revs up, the car will shut off. The car seemsto be bucking as it goes. Then it shuts off. No transmission noise, have to give it gas to getit over 50, but runs better once revsare high. Any ideas?

You need to take it to a good shop, have them scan and monitor sensors, one maybe reading incorrect, but within spec. My guess is a O2 sensor

sorry to say , but it is not needed at this time. It is recomended at 60,000 miles.

I had an 02 F-150 that had a CEL on and it also said DPFE sensor. Bought the part for about $15 bucks from the dealer and put it on. Turned the CEL off, but mine began bucking too. Not all the time, just under light load like going up a hill or something.


I tried about 100 different things and it ended up being one of the COP's that were bad. That's coil on plug if you don't know and they sit right on top of each spark plug. There EXPENSIVE from the dealer. I found all eight on ebay for the price of one from the dealer.


It never ran better once I replaced those!
