Just curious to see what everyone's done, if anything. I wouldn't be

Who else has modded their Mountaineer, is it 4WD or AWD, and where'd
you get the actual mod? I'm hoping to nudge my gas mileage a little
closer to 20MPG with the AWD [img]smileys/smiley5.gif[/img]

doesn't seem people mod their mountaineers.
we just got an 05 and mileage is horrible. its the 4L v6 that should produce more power than it is. a 4L engine should make at least 250 hp easily but it doesn't. i think if we can get more power from the engine it would actually help with mpg.

I wouldn't be suprised...I don't really know if I want to redo the
exhaust, as I have the premium edition...which would look kinda weird
rumbling around [img]smileys/smiley8.gif[/img] I've seen a few CAI's
out on E-bay and there is one that looks good, but I'm still waiting to
see what everyone else has done. I'm getting about 16.7-16.8 at about
80% interstate driving around 70-75mph, so I'm definitely looking for a
little more.



Mine's also a V6, but I couldn't pass up the deal I got on it...and I
won't be towing much either...but yeah, we need to do something about
the gas mileage [img]smileys/smiley5.gif[/img]

I have the same problem. I just inherited a Loaded 2WD 2000 Mountaineer and I can't find any sort of performance part for it outside of flowmaster mufflers really. The only luck I have had is looking into Explorer parts, which from what I have seen and what I know works just fine with my car, since at that point the vehicles were relatively identical. I don't know about yalls since it appears yalls are newer models though. But I would say try looking for Explorer parts that are compatible.

I also inherited a mountaineer and my 5.0 V8 AWD is absolutly killing me. I wish it came with better mileage. i am looking into buying a car just to make up for the poor mileage i am getting now. I am looking at getting a ford fusion since it looks very cool but i don't want to give up my mountaineer

I've been questioning getting rid of the Mountaineer for the sole fact that it's eating me alive in gas [img]smileys/smiley5.gif[/img] My one-way work commute just went from 19 to 27 miles each way [img]smileys/smiley21.gif[/img] Oddly enough, my average MPG has gone from 17.5 to 18.5 with only a new stock air filter! [img]smileys/smiley20.gif[/img]

I still may consider trying out the cold air intake kit that's out on e-bay and other places for it for ~$200...anyone try this yet?

The best modification to improve gas mileage is to drive less ortrade it in on a Fusion like I did.

Haha, I almost traded mine in, but the gas prices seem to be coming back down to $2 a gallon..I've used the Mountaineer to get a 42" TV home, upright, and still in the box, not to mention a 56" entertainment center, still in the box in that thing [img]smileys/smiley3.gif[/img][img]smileys/smiley4.gif[/img] I didn't the latter had a shot at getting in there, but I was wrong! [img]smileys/smiley1.gif[/img]

It's just been so handy lately, and the only things that have gone wrong in 30K miles are one sensor and the weather stripping had to be pushed back in - and I broke the plastic cover for the center seat's release in the middle row either putting the entertainment center or hardwood flooring in there [img]smileys/smiley8.gif[/img]

Anyways, back to modding - anyone tried that CAI kit yet? I may try that over the winter to see what happens...geezus JT, that's a long list of mods! What does that thing run? [img]smileys/smiley16.gif[/img]

I still get over 20 mpg if I baby it


Haven't run an honest quarter mile yet.I did use one of those g-tech things from a friend-did 13.9 with Throttle opening at 3.6 volts out of 4.75. , so about 4/5 throttle? AWD so no hook up problem at all.


If anybody needs help, just ask.


As far as an intake, you may just enjoy the sound so much you eat more fuel. They will help in both ways, for economy you just have to be disciplined and really baby the skinny pedal. Try to keep the rpms below 3000 at all costs.


Remove the roof rack cross bars ( seems silly, but worth 1-2 mpg)


Keep tires inflated to maximum air pressure.


Use amsoil fluids everywhere.
