I just bought a 2003 mercury Mountinair V8. The front differential tuned out to be badly worn out and broken. To save money, I replaced it with a second hand differential from a 2004 explorer V6 which did not seem to work.
I took it to the mercury dealer, who, after several experiments determined that it is the wrong differential they claimed that the Explorer differential is different from that of the Mountinair’s. Furthermore, the Mountinair comes with a couple of different differential models.
I have my doubts about their claims, and would appreciate helping me with the following questions:
1. How does the Mountinair AWD work, and how is it different from that of the Explorer?
2. Is it true that the Mountinair comes with two different diffs? If so, what are their numbers, ad how are they different?
3. Can an Explorer diff. be converted or retrofitted to work with the Mountinair system? What kind of parts need to be replaced for the conversion?
Thank you – appreciate your assistance.
