New mountaineer owner with a problem

Hi, my name is Mike and I just purchased a 2003 Mountaineer a week ago. I love the car but just recently (5 days after I bought it)my wife took it to work on Thursday and noticed that when she started it that it seemed like she had to turn the key a little longer than normal to get it to start but it did start. Eight hours later when she got out of work she went to start it and it would NOT start. The engine cranked but it would not start. It actually seemed like it was either not getting spark or it was not getting fuel-one of the two. We waited about an hour and tried to start it again but it still wouldn't start.
So we went ahead and had it towed(over 30 miles away)to a garage. the next day the mechanic went to go and start the car and IT STARTED RIGHT UP!! I have no clue what to think anymore!?!
I have noticed that when it did start it revs very high right away and comes down pretty fast. Does anyone have a clue on what could be wrong? I'm thinking it's the fuel pump but I would like all your expert opinions about it. By the way it has 102,000 miles on it if that helps.
I would really appreciate some help or advise on this. Thankyou!

Strange. I hate intermitent starting problems. What kind of climate do you live in? Does it have CEL lit up? Sounds like it could be vapor lock but it is rare in newer vehicles. How has it been since? Next time it acts up there are some things we can do to try and narrow it down. Like listening for fuel pump priming when the key is turned on.
