i have a 97 5.0 merc. Is my oil filter in a hard to get at spot? Cause i want to check it to make sure its okay. And by putting in a performance one, would i increase my mpg

Performance oil filters are less restrictive, and may allow contaminants to damage your motor. The Motorcraft filter is a three chamber filter. It is made for your vehicle. I would not switch, but that is my opinion. I can't imagine that the oil filter would make much difference in the fuel economy. You could change the chip to a more conservative chip, add a tornado to your air box, make sure your tires or properly inflated (or slightly over), keep vehicle waxed, make sure the air filter are clean, replace the fuel filter....all of these things would have much more impact on fuel economy over the oil filter.

OK we did the oil change no prob except the filter was on real tight like mentioned above. access to it wasn't too bad just really hard to turn. i'll get a tool for next time.

One thing i found it odd was the oil drain plug had rubber sealant around it that seemed to be just falling apart. color was a dull orange red and was probably applied on like teflon tape on the thread. i just hope this stuff didn't get in the engine. i removed all of it and screwed the plug back on.

anyone know what that stuff could be?

That was the the oil drain plug gasket and it's important to get a new one and replace it. It should be repaced about every 10 oil changes, if not the plug will leak.

i hope it hasn't been leaking oil. i used dino oil so will do an oil change again soon to synthetic. now two questions...

1. do they have a gasket that is like a washer instead of the rubber stuff?

2. the car i think came with synthetic blend oil. is switching to fully synthetic not a good idea on the new motor?

Best case scenario k&n oil filter hp2010 and mobile 1 5w20 full synthetic oil

DadsMerc 06-02-2006 12:44 PM

i'll go with synthetic and change every 5000
