My wife has owned a 1997 & her current 2002 Mountaineer. She traded the 97' when it had 123,000 on it (95,ooo highway miles from her work) for the 2002. Besides basic service stuff & tires, the 02' has been problem free. It now has 112,000 on it.

Recently I drove us on a six hour trip in her Mountaineer and noticed a "hesitation" when it shifted. It was like it wasn't sure what gear it wanted to be in. It did it whether I was "on the gas" to pass, or just driving normally. I thought maybe a U-joint at first, but our mechanic checked them all out. It doesn't do this all the time, but about 20% of the time, so not sure what to think.

Mechanic suggested adding some type of additive to it since they are basically a "service free" transmission? Any ideas?? Thanks!!

this truck has something thats called an "adaptive transmision".it learnes as you drive and sets it self to your driving patterns. it will switch gears accordingly. so if youre an aggrasive driver and your wife is not, your going to feel that somethings not right.this SUV is ideal for one driver.i had the same problem when i just got mine, and now i love it. its very responsive.

Thanks for your reply. The shifting problem does it for the wife also. She drives 30 miles on way to work each day & has been noticing it for a couple of months. Granted, she does have a little more of a lead foot than I do, but it occurs no matter who is driving. Any other ideas on this we might look into? Thanks again!

try changing your trans fluid. I have a Grand Marquis that had a trans shudder when going into overdrive. the ford dealer said to change the trans fluid and I did and it went away.
