Fuel pump removal

'98 Mystique, 2.5L V6, Automatic.

The Haynes manual says you can remove and replace the fuel pump without dropping the tank. Access is available under the rear seat.

Has anyone actually done this? I looked at mine today and it looks like it may be difficult to get the pump back in and locked in place properly.

I want to get inside the tank to check for trash or obstructions. This is related to the previous post about fuel starvatioin.

Thanks for your input.

Just hook some pliers on the ears to turn the ring on the fuel pump. You may want to make a mark on it and the surface by it so you know the alignment and how far you need to turn the lock ring when reinstalling it. Lefty loosy, righty tighty. It has a large oring on it, if it is damaged get a new one. If it is OK, I use Dow Corning 4 compound to lube it up and it will not tear and go right back in. Make sure you line up the tabs again so it does not leak.
