I'd recommend the Grand Marquis. But if that's too big, the Malan is really nice too.

If you want older, The Grand Marquis from most years holds up well. Try to avoid transition years like 92 and 88 (I've had some interesting issues with my 88). 98 and later are pretty stout (just be mindful of the intake manifold possibly having cracks).
I would say to avoid the Mystique. Most of the smaller older cars are really hit or miss depending on how well the maintenance was done.

Thumbs up Best Mercury vehicle

As a long-time Sable fan, I've got to give my nod to a newer Sable, Frank. Always have been a great combo of quality, luxury, performance and style. Now a 2010 Taurus with Mercury badges on it would be pretty neat as well. It depends what you like in a car. The Marquis is a big, comfortable, capable car, just a little too vanilla for me. I like something more on the sporty side of handling and acceleration. Whatever you choose, enjoy your new Mercury!

I agree that as far as new car's go the sable/taurus would be a better choice for performance and equipment.

Used cars however (< 06 ish), I have to say that the Marquis would walk all over the Sable. Comfort, durability, resale value, trunk size.

Of corse if you are willing to turn a few wrenches then you can cover the performance side quite well with the Marquis

For midsize, I'd go with an 09 Sable. Full size, a Marquis. Then you have a choice of 2 SUV's, Mariner(smaller) Mountanier(like the Explorer) both very nice, the Mariner gets great mileage with the 4cyl auto FWD.
Then there's new Milan. Very nice car and much improved from 06-09 models. But they are nice too.
