My 1999 Sable has developed a low-pitch hum/vibration from the front
end. It has just above 115,000 actual miles. I experience
this at any speed, but especially when ascending/descending
hills. I have had both the front and rear wheel bearings
checked. The front ones were fine. The right, rear bearing
had to be replaced. It was so bad that my mechanic had to use a
cutting torch to remove the bearing disk from the spindle--a
considerable cost. Is there any possibility that I could be
experiencing the effects of worn ball joints, tie rod ends or any other
component associated with front wheel drive?

I am becoming rather skeptical of vehicles with front wheel
drive. Is this Sable ready for the salvage yard, or can it be
repaired inexpensively? If not, I am in the market for a solid
Crown Victoria or Mercury Marquis that is in good shape. Because
of this experience with this Sable, I am seriously thinking of
abandoning front wheel drive vehicles altogether. I do not feel
safe driving something that I constantly hear humming and groaning with
occasional vibrations from its structural components.

I appreciate any advice that a person can give. Thank you.
