I am the owner of a 96 gm andI have started having problems with the abs. whenI brake to stop just before the car comes to a stop the system starts chattering.I took it to a mechanic and he checked it out and said he did not know what was causing it. I unpluged the abs and am useing it as regular brakes.

No Patrick I don't think he did.I didn't know there was such a thing.


Do you know if any Auto parts suppliers( Advance, Auto Zone, Oreilly's) would have one of these as a courtesy to their customer?

My 96 grand marquis is approaching 90,000 miles is it time for the u-joints and the oem shocks to be replaced? thanks for your help. Bobby Shay

Before you replace anything,remove wheels and behind the brake assy. you will see a "cog" around the axle shaft. There is a sensor that protrudes that senses how many cogs go past under braking. More times than not,especially with higher mileage vehicles,that the sensor is encrusted with brake pad/shoe debris. Since the brakes are usually a mettalic compound to some degree, the debris causes a sensor "non-read" issue. Simply clean sensor and wheel cog,reinstall wheels and try again. If this still does not cure,let us know and we'll go from there.

To Lenny: I took your advice and had the mechanic check the cogs and sensors and he found one of the sensors out of position. The screw holding the sensor in place had vibrated out. He cleaned everything put the sensor back in the proper position and now my brakes work perfectly. Thanks Lenny very much for your suggestion.
