Hello, I'm doing this repair for my uncle who just found out that both rear springs are broken in his 2001 Mercury Sable LS 4Dr sedan (DOHC).

Before doing this repair i just had a couple question hoping that someone could help me out/lead me to the right direction.

1) I looked at the car last and it seems to get to the top bolts of the strut tower, i'll need to remove the cover behind the back seat. How do you remove that?

2) I didn't get to remove the wheels, but i'm assuming that the strut is mounted on two bolts on the bottom, like a regular suspension?

Thanks in advance for any help,

By the way, is there a link to the actual repair guide on here? i looked through pages and did a search with no luck.

Thanks,

I can't answer your questions. I know this is a common problem, though. How many miles on the car before they broke? I have a 99 and have not had to do this repair yet, is my car susceptible to this same failure or is it only the newer ones?

in order to do this, you will need to access the top bolt and undo the bracket that holds the rear wheel assembly from it letting it hang. you will need a spring compressor and a magnetic level for when you reattach the lower bolts to the strut...should be 2. while changing the spring, i would also change the strut.
