Hello. I am a newb here. I wish I could introduce myself under better circumstances, but such is not the case.

I have a 2002 Sable 3.0 24V. The check engine light has been on
for a while (I got it looked at, and the dealer said nothing was wrong
that he could find, so the light remained on).

I went on a long trip to NY last Sunday. I was going 75mhp on the
highway. The car ran normal until about 1 and 1/2 hours in of the
2hr trip up to where I wanted to go. The car then began to run
real rough. It would jerk pretty hard. The RPMs on the tach
would drop (even if I was reving the engine). Shortly after the
jerking and dropping of the RPMs, the engine would just die and I had
to pull over. I restarted the car (to see if I could "reboot the
computer" so-to-speak, thinking I have a ECU or sensor problem) and the
engine ran, but real rough. I revved the engine (the RPMs then
revved up as well). After a few seconds of revving, the engine
then ran normal and I was on my way without problem. However, the
problem would come back at about 30min intervals. I had this
problem twice going up to NY and every 30min on the way back
home.

I called Ford up, and they said it could be a multitude of problems but
they suggested I take a look at the ignition control module. The
car is currently out of warrenty (it gets driven A LOT--mostly on the
highway).

Please, please, please help me out. I've been scratching my head
since Sunday on this one. I am now afraid to take this car on any
trip longer than 30min.

Thank you so much in advance.

Mike

Hey, it could be the gas cap...no I'm seriouse, if you screw it on all the way you make the gas tank air tight, so your fuel pump creats a vacume and your engine doesn't get any gas. as for the check engine light, I dunno,I would take it to a mechanic that you trust(not the dealership) and have them hook it up to find out what is wrong.Edited by: Sablefreak
