95 Mercury Sable Heater line adaptors

ok, so while doing a quick inspection on why the heat inside the car was weakening, i looked underneath the hood and saw antifreeze splashed up on the air filter housing and the air hose itself. recently, i did some extensive cleaning on the heater core lines and heater core itself as well and had good heat coming out, but after seeing the splashing, i knew the line protruding from the engine block was the culprit.

my question is, since this nipple (that was severely rusted away and rotted out) i took out simply slid right out of the hole; do the nipple adaptors screw into the holes or do they need to be welded into place? i measured what was left of the old line to be roughly 11/16 of an inch, but the new ones i bought and tried:

5/8 was too small in the hole
1/2 and 3/4 was too big

i need some help figuring this out.

what about pressure fittings.flare out the ends of the hose you have and make it work.
